Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this study is to discuss the impact of using the inner talk ability on the development of EFL learners’ oral performance. The study also focuses on the ongoing internal dialogue that individuals engage and how itcan help EFL learners to overcome the difficulties such as “stress, anxiety, depression, lack of self-confidence” which prevent them from speaking and communicating both inside and outside the classrooms. The present study employed a quantitative research methodology with a descriptive approach. The data collection method utilized was a survey, in which a questionnaire served as the primary instrument for gathering information. The questionnaire was conducted with 60 participants from third year license students in the department of English at the University of M’sila. The findings of the study approved that EFL learners have supportive attitudes towards the use of inner-talk in enhancing their speaking skills. Having internal discussions and listening to internal thoughts can motivate students to acquire more knowledge, allowing them to improve their pronunciation, motivating their cognitive abilities, and enhancing fluency. The results signify that self-talks can build confidence when practicing English by decreasing anxiety, stress and other psychological factors in which it can be considered as an effective method to advance EFL learners’ oral competence.
