Abstract
Plantago albicans L is a medicinal plant from the M'sila region used in traditional
medicine to treat several ailments, particularly in the topical treatment of wounds and burns.
Our study is structured around two axes, the first is devoted to the study of antioxidant and
antibacterial activities of organic and aqueous extracts from Plantago albicans L, and the
second, concerns the preparation of galenic formulations from extracts of aerial parts of
Plantago albicans L. The extraction is done by three methods: infusion, decoction and
extraction by maceration. The phytochemical analysis of the extracts revealed the presence of
several secondary metabolites such as: tannins (especially catechic tannins), saponosides,
coumarins, mucilages, flavonoids and terpenoids. The richness of the plant in phenolic
compounds is confirmed by a quantitative analysis based on the dosage of phenolic
compounds and flavonoids. We realize the quantification of total polyphenols and flavonoids
by the reagent of Folin-Ciocalteu and by the aluminum trichloride, respectively. The results of
the flavonoid and polyphenol contents show the richness of the extracts in these compounds.
The antioxidant activity by DPPH test shows the effectiveness of the extracts and outgoing
hydroethanol extract, their IC50 is 3.655±0.009μg/ml.Antibacterial tests showed good
activities against two bacterial strains (Pseudomonas Aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus),
the highest activity was obtained by hydroethanolic extract and petroleum ether extract with a
zone of inhibition of 21 mm and 21.5 mm against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. In the course of
our work, we incorporate the extracts in galenic formulations in order to improve their
relatively weak adsorptive powers in crude form. For this purpose, we carried out a series of
tests with different extracts and different dermo-cosmetic excipients, in order to select those
which seemed to us to be the most adapted to replace the old components in the perspective of
a much better harmlessness. We also proceeded to the quality control of the prepared semisolid forms.
