Abstract

Matricariachamomillais a medicinal plant of the Asteraceae family. This species known as "chamomile", very popular in Algeria, is widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment of several pathologies. The objective of this work is the evaluation of the antioxidant activity of the extracts; aqueous (AE), methanolic (ME) and ethyl acetate (EAE), of Matricariachamomilla and to determine their content of phenolic compounds, namely, total polyphenols and flavonoids. The aerial parts of the plant were subjected to extraction by decoction and to maceration. The aqueous extract records the highest yield (29%). The extracts were analyzed for their total polyphenol and flavonoid content using the Folin-Ciocalteu method and aluminum trichloride respectively. The results show that EAE exhibited remarkably high contents of polyphenols (62.833±1.018μg EAG/mg) and flavonoids (48.929±0.261μg EQ/mg) compared to EA and EM extracts. The antioxidant activity of the three extracts was evaluated in vitro by the DPPH free radical, total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and β-carotene bleaching tests. The DPPH method showed that the best inhibitory concentrations expressed in IC50 were obtained by EM followed by EAE then EA, respectively (55.861±0.373; 241.818±1.254; 339.790±2.957 µg/ml). However, BHT (used as standard) showed higher activity (IC50 = 21.841±0.268μg/ml). The total antioxidant capacity is obtained according to the following order EA > EAE > EM, respectively (253.204 ± 0.160; 249.750 ± 0.409; 155.565 ± 0.736 µg EVc / mg). The β-carotene bleaching results showed degrees of inhibition expressed in IC50 by the extracts tested in the order EM > EA > EAE, respectively (6.045±4.409; 15.445±5.767; 32.612±2.141 µg/ml). However, BHT showed greater activity (IC50 = 1.292±1.271μg/ml).
