The primary objective of this work is to present robust control techniques designed for wind energy systems using brushless doubly-fed induction machines (BDFIM). Powered by a variable-pitch wind turbine, the machine’s power stator is directly connected to the grid, while the control stator is fed through a power converter. To guarantee optimal system performance, an active and reactive power control strategy has been designed, allowing for the independent regulation of both power components using a voltage-source inverter that is PI-controlled. The Super-Twisting algorithm-based first- and second-order sliding mode control is the special subject of this work.A performance evaluation of the proposed control methods was conducted. Simulation results confirm that these hierarchical control strategies deliver excellent performance in system management, particularly in reference tracking, decoupling, response time, and current quality.
