(2021-06) Miss Boutbig Radia, Miss BenYounes Lamia
Abstract Text messaging has been a debatable source since it became a very popular way of communication. It is criticized for its negative effect on students‘ quality writing because of its constant presence in formal situation. This dissertation aims at exploring to what extent text messaging may affect EFL students‘ quality writing that targeted second year students of English at Mohammed Boudiaf University of M‘sila. Therefore, two questionnaires were addressed for both teachers and students. The students‘ were asked to hand over screenshots of their text messages from their mobile phones. Thus, the results of the analysis of both texts and questionnaires confirmed the hypotheses. It showed that there is a negative effect which appears on the lexical level and the structural one in students‘ writing in forms of informal language and misuse of punctuation. This study should provide assistance to teachers and students to be aware of the effect that texting has on writing in order to be able to control it. However, the findings confirmed that texting language has a negative influence on some students‘ writing. Students use abbreviations and short form of words unconsciously in their formal writing due to their overuse of texting language.
