Abstract
High voltage insulators are key elements in the operation of electrical power networks.
Their role is to connect the conductors to the supports by ensuring their electrical
insulation. They can be exposed, during the year, to several electrical, physical and
environmental factors including pollution. This can threaten and reduce the electrical
performance of dielectric materials. In this work, a study on a cap and rod insulator
(1512L) is proposed to study the repartition of electric field and potential along the
insulator under different conditions. First, we will perform three scenarios by applying
different voltage levels. Simulation studies are done using Comsol software to evaluate
the potential and electrical field distribution along the insulator. To do the analysis; a
statistical model to deal with the relationship between the pollution and the insulator
layer parameters (conductivity of the pollution layer and its position) is proposed.
These parameters are varied each time in this search. The statistical technique of
variance (ANOVA) is used to assess the impact of each parameter. The study proposed
in this thesis provides an effective and useful working tool to examine and enhance the
thermal and dielectric properties of the studied insulators
