Abstract
Through this work, we aim to trace the path of absurdity in the Algerian novel, specifically in Samir Kasimi’s trilogy Folly and Stairs, through studying form and content.In form, we will see the manifestations of absurdity and nihilism in the structure of the novel, starting from the disintegration of the plot and the end of the timeline, all the way to spaces and places intertwined with each other, due to the absurdity of the characters and the multiplicity of their roles in the trilogy.As for the content, the work has limited the themes of the novel, which are based on philosophical theories such as existentialism and nihilism, in which Samir Qasimi applied the principles of these two philosophies, such as disgust towards the feminine element, selfalienation and confusion, elitism and selfishness, and the existential anxiety that dominated the novel’s characters, in addition to marginalization and a sense of futility. This was done in an unusual narrative form, based on exposing the narrative style and revealing that the stairs of Trullard and the follies of the Duke of Deckar were nothing but two of Jamal Hamidi’s nightmares and nothing else.
It should be noted that the novelist has transcended the limits of imagination and the natural by relying on a group of fantasy worlds such as a world without doors and a world that does not read, in addition to another world that is considered the cornerstone of the trilogy, which is the dream world, in addition to another group of worlds in which the theory of possible worlds was demonstrated. The parallelism, which was not limited to the elements of personality and space, but went beyond that to analyze the behavior of the characters who were living in their own world, escaping the realistic natural world, so the world of black comedy and sarcasm was a refuge for her from the absurdity and unreasonableness of the world.
