Abstract

ABSTRACT The current study is a psychological analysis which involves the protagonist Madeline in Nicola Yoon’s Novel “Everything Everythig” (2015). The focus is on studying Madelin’s character according to Erik Erikson eight stages of personality development. In this study, two characters impacted and shaped Madeline’s personality development; her mother Pauline and her lover Olly. From a psychological standpoint, this dissertation aims to study the effect of social relationships and clarify long-held notions about whether people actually need others to develop or if the people surrounding simply push them further from their true selves. Writers such as Nicola Yoon express themselves via their works and describe what was happening at their times. In this study, “Everything Everythig” is analyzed in a psychological reading to point to how social relationships within a community affect peoples’ personalities. It shows also that interaction within the environment is important, for higher mental functions develop through social interaction; thus, development moves from the social level to the individual level
