Abstract

This study investigates the use of defense mechanisms and the role of tragic downfall in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. On the one hand, it applies Freud’s defense mechanisms to Hazel as the protagonist of the novel who suffers from cancer and tries to resist it in her own terms. On the other hand, the study goes further with Aristotle’s theory of the tragic hero which is clearly applied to Augustus who suffers from cancer too and has in mind that idea of doing a heroic act in order to stay in memory and never fade into oblivion. The current study is actually discussed through a descriptive analytical approach for portraying the characters’ use of some resisting tools and their trying to get through hamartia and their flaws. Thus, the research is made up of two main chapters. The first chapter is theoretical and deals with a socio-historical and a conceptual framework. The second chapter represents the core of the study in which the main theories are applied. Eventually, the characters attempts to seek some ways in order to make their lives worth living and get rid of their harsh conditions. Yet, they may face a tragic downfall due to their own decisions which primarily contradict their wishes.
