Abstract
Algeria knew during the Ottoman era the emergence of the phenomenon of captivity and prisoners that resulted from the naval jihad in the Mediterranean basin, the increasing number of these captives led to a change in the demographic composition of the city of Algiers during the Ottoman period . They played an important role in the economic and social spheres , and some institutions were even established specifically for them .
This is the subject I wanted to address in my research , wich focuses on captives in Algeria during the Ottoman era . It sheds light on the reality of theChristian captives situation and how the Algerian authorities at the time dealt with them explaining their way of life , their practices of their own religious rituals , their treatment by Algerians , their places of residence , and the punishments imposed on them . It also highlights their comparatively better conditions during the modern period , wich contradicts the image presented by foreign sources regarding the reality of captives in Algeria .
The study concludes by presenting the most famous captives who converted to Islam and even held positions of authority within the Regency of Algiers .
This summary reflects a comprehensive study of the humanitarian, political, and social aspects of European captives in Algiers during the Ottoman period.
