Abstract
Abstract
Online teaching can be defined as the education that relies on internet use. It’s a new technique
that is believed to be able to develop and facilitate the teaching-learning process. Algeria is one
of the countries that attempt to use online teaching in its educational institutions during the
spread of the Corona Virus hoping that it will facilitate learning from home; using computers
or smart phones connected to internet; and compensate the physical presence in universities.
However, the application of this new technique in an environment where people are unfamiliar
with the use of technology causes a lot of problems to learners and decreases their motivation.
The present research is conducted with third year EFL students at Msila university of Mohamed
Boudiaf. Its purpose is to highlight the negative effects of online teaching on EFL learners’
motivation and provide some suggestions that may help teachers to update their way of
teaching and use some new strategies that increase student’s motivation through the use of this
technique. This paper contains three chapters. The first one is a background about online
teaching: its definition, characteristics and advantages. It, also, discusses some problems that
students face when learning online. The second chapter contains both the: positive and the
negative impacts of online teaching on EFL learner’s motivation as it offers some adjusting
strategies to improve learners’ motivation. The last chapter includes analyzing the data
collected from teachers’ and students’ questionnaires. The results of the questionnaires reveal
that teachers are not aware of how to teach online and design online courses according to their
learners’ needs, interests, and level. The results, also, confirm our research hypothesis and
indicate that online teaching is neither for every teacher not for every learner
